WHEN I VOTE

In the Middle East, when women vote, they dip their finger in purple ink. I saw a photograph of a group of women holding up their purple thumbs, triumphant over the opportunity to do something so many take for granted. I found this image almost ridiculous when compared to the famous poem, "When I grow up, I shall wear purple". I wanted to create a contrast between the experience of Middle Eastern women and the relative freedom of women in modern society.
